Some reading recommendations assembled with the help of my now 12 year old son (in no particular order).

Who Let the Gods Out by Maz Evans
Some very funny modern myths populated by the very human Greek gods. The main character, a boy and young carer, has to find his way around through the chaos. Lots of books in this series. If you enjoy Maz Evans, also check her “Vi Spy” series, which we also enjoyed.
Loki – A Bad God’s Guide to Being Good by Louie Stowell
Trickster god Loki is punished by being sent to school on earth. Thor too. He’s an arrogant but somehow enjoyable idiot, so is Thor. Relatable. Another one with lots in the series.

Holes by Louis Sachar
Timeless. Somehow real and mythical at the same time. How can a novel about digging holes be amazing?
The Night Bus Hero by Onjali Q Raúf
A bully who is used to making bad choices finds a chance to change. You don’t want to like them but by the end you might just change your mind. (We also enjoyed “The Boy at the Back of the Class”, also by Onjali.)

Nevermoor – The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend
A child escapes misery to come into their magical powers, learning to find and trust friends and family along the way. First in a series.
Varjak Paw by S F Said
What if cats had kung-fu? A pampered cat learns to survive when they are cast out onto the streets. Can they master the Way?

We restricted ourselves to six book, a small selection of the books we’ve enjoyed over the last few years. There are so many more amazing children’s books we could recommend. If you’ve got any recommendations, please let me know!
